Coaching Update

To: Merrylands Swimming Squad and their Parents

It is with great regret that the committee of the Merrylands Amateur Swimming Club has accepted the resignation of Kristen Sunner as Head Coach of our swimming squad.

Over the past 12 years Kristen has been coach and much more to many children and her efforts are very much appreciated.

Kristen will continue to coach until the end of June. During July while Wentworthville pool is closed for 4 weeks the squad will take a break.

In July an advertisement will appear in the New South Wales Swimmer Magazine seeking the services of a qualified swim coach. It is intended that interviews take place during August.

On Monday 1st August the squad will recommence at Wentworthville pool. Peter Johnston and Meagan Legge have offered to provide coaching services in the interim. Accordingly the coaching rights have been temporarily granted to Peter and Meaghan.

Peter and Meaghan will provide coaching for the squad from 5:15 pm to 6:45 pm Monday to Thursday at the cost of $60 per month per child.

The goal of the committee is to have the new coach in place to coincide with the squad recommencing training at Merrylands Pool on the 12th September 2005.

If you have any concerns please speak to Peter, Meaghan or any Committee Member.

Regards

David Johnson
President

  • Club Coach Resigns

Kristen Sunner has tonight resigned her position as Head Coach of Merrylands Amateur Swimming Club Inc.

The resignation will close an eleven year chapter in the club's history.

Kristen became the club coach at the start of the 1994 season. During that time she has seen numerous swimmers move through the club and squad and worked hard to keep the squad together when Merrylands Pool closed each year for the winter, running sessions at Granville, The Wran Centre, Parramatta and Wentworthville over the past years.

Despite her best efforts, many swimmers, unable to cope with the cold water conditions at Merrylands, moved on to other clubs and better facilities. Three of those swimmers have since gone on to compete at the Australian Age Championships. Two of those swimmers in particular, which Kristen taught from a very young age, would not have gone onto this level without her initial instruction in the early stages of their swimming life.

Notwithstanding the inferior training conditions and small pool of swimmers to draw from, Kristen still had a good amount of success with our swimmers, the highlight being her first Australian Age Qualifier and ultimately Australian Age Finalist in Melbourne in 2001.

Add the National results to the club's results at Cumberland, Metropolitan and State Championships and the Speedo Sprint Series / Shell Age Group Series over the last 11 years and it has been a very successful period for the club.

Of course the representative results are only the tip of the iceburg. The hundreds of PBs or medals acheived by every squad member at school carnivals and inter-club meets shows the true impact that Kristen and her assistant coaches have had.

However, despite the sucess, the years have taken their toll and over the last couple of years Kristen has struggled to keep up the commitment that the swimmers deserve. She has therefore decided to resign her position.
Kristen will remain in charge of the coaching program until the end of June, 2005 overseaing one final Metropolitan Short Course Team before moving on.

Kristen will be greatly missed by the swimmers and their parents, we thank her for her efforts and wish her all the best for the future.

  • 2004/2005 Presentation Evening

Brittany Johnson was awarded the Champion of Champions Award for the second year in a row at our Annual Presentation Evening last night. The award is presented to the best all round swimmer, taking into account performances both at club and representative meets.
Brittany is a deserved winner, winning both her Age and Open Championships, placing second in the Female Graded Pointscore, setting 9 club records and representing the club at the Cumberland and Metropolitan Championships.

David Wang, was awarded the Michael Rossek Trophy for the highest placed Junior Boy in the Graded Races Pointscore while Amber Johnson received the Ronald Exley Trophy for the highest placed Junior Girl.

The Jack Smart Encouragement Award was presented to Dominique Bleeker, who steadily improved over the season progressing from 25m to 50m in different strokes.

Team Johnston's winning run in the Relay Competition was finally brought to an end after 6 straight wins with the Merrylands Mermaids winning the hotly contested competition.

Peter Johnston's 5 year winning streak in the Senior Handicap was also brought to an end as Glen Stanford blitzed the competition to take out the award.

This year also saw the presentation of awards for our second ever Winter Season Competition. The 7 week competition was well contested with senior swimmer Malcolm Bleeker and Brittany Johnson winning the male and female competitions.

After a successful representative year, David Wang was presented with a photo to be added to the wall of representative photos in the club room. His achievements over the last twelve months include representing the club at Cumberland, Metropolitan & State Short & Long Course Championships, 3rd place in the 100m Breaststroke at the Cumberland Short & Long Course Championships and 2nd place in the 50m Breaststroke at the Speedo Sprint Series Finals.

Learn to Swim instructors were also recognised this year for their efforts over the season. The instructors were presented with a towel and bag to thank them for their help running the 13 week program.

The night was very enjoyable and those people that stayed after the presentation had a good time joining in the fun.

Thank you to all the people who helped organise the presentation and who helped throughout the season.

Thank you especially to the Trophy Committee:
    Patricia Johnston
    Margaret Edwards
    Pauline Legge
for their work selecting and setting up the trophies.

You can find the season results in the Club Races section and the full list of other awards presented on the night in the Presentation section.

Our second Winter Season makes a splash on Saturday, April 2nd and will run for 7 short weeks, finishing on Saturday, 14th May.

As with last year, the Winter Season will feature some different events that are not run as part of the summer season.

Firstly we will have Distance Day on April 30th with 800m & 1500m events which form part of the winter pointscore. The qualifying time for these events has been lowered to 6:20:00 but there are still a couple of opportunities to achieve the time.

Secondly the Winter Season will again feature the 200m Mystery Medley. This event is a 200m Individual Medley however the order of strokes for each swimmer is drawn out of a hat prior to the event, making a very interesting race.
Swimmers can swim the Mystery Medley in addition to their 3 Graded Pointscore races on the morning. Just put MM in the distance on a Medley Card to enter. This season you will have an extra opportunity to swim the Mystery Medley with three on the program.

Most weeks we are finished by 8am.
