Swimming Australia has announced that Melbourne will host the Australian Swimming Championships in 2006 & 2007.

Sydney has hosted the Championships for the past three years but next year they will move to The Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre which will also be used for the 2006 Commonwealth Games and the 2007 World Championships.
Holding the Australian Championships, which also double as the selection trials for the events, at the centre will give the Australian team the best possible preparation for the meets.

With the Championships moving to Melbourne, this year's Championships are your last chance for at least a couple of years to see the Australian Swimmers in person. Finals tickets for the meet are still available through Ticketek and can be purchased via http://www.ticketek.com.au/ or at the door. Ticket prices range from $20.00 - $10.00 for adults and $10.00 - $5.00 for concessions.

However Swimming Australia will still have events in Sydney and they are in negotiations over the possibility of running one of the World Cup events in Sydney in November this year.

This season will see some changes made to the State and District Development Squad programs.

Swimmers will now only be eligible for one squad and NSW Swimming will take over control of the District's A Squads (the Challenge Squad in the Cumberland District).

The District B, C and D squads (currently the Cumberland Target, Achiever and Novice Squads) will also undergo changes with changes to the selection criteria, athlete eligibility, and focus of the different squads. Swimmers will also need to apply for selection in the squads.

Cumberland is yet to decide on the new structure of their District Squads however the changes will come into effect this season. Application forms and more information will be available once the squad structure is finalised.

More information can be found on the NSW Swimming website.

  • Swimming Australia Junior Sport Policy

Some major changes will occur over the next 12 months to the way swimming competitions are conducted, as a result of Swimming Australia’s new Junior Sport Policy.

The Policy addresses a number of areas, one of which is keeping swimmers involved in the sport for the long term. Currently there is an estimated 30% dropout every year and the view is that younger swimmers are being pushed too hard, too early, creating a situation where swimmers are dropping out of the sport at an early age.

To change this trend, the approach to competition will be changed, with and emphasis on fun and development. The changes are expected to include:

    10yrs & Under
    • No State Championships
    • Regional/District Championships for 10yrs only (no 10yrs & Under)
    • No “Championship” events at Regional/District for 9yrs & Under where medals are to be presented
    • Recognition of participation at all State run or sanctioned events
    • Modified rules - no disqualifications, meets no longer than 4 hours, no one-start rule

    11-12 Years
    • State, Regional/District Championships for 11yrs (no 11yrs & Under)
    • Championship events no longer than 400m
    • Not eligible for Open Water events

    13yrs & Over
    • No Change

These changes are supported by the Australian Swimming Coaches & Teachers Association and it is proposed that the policy will be implemented from 1st October, 2005. The full policy can be viewed on the Swimming Australia website.

  • Cumberland Sprint Meet Cancelled

The 2005 Cumberland Sprint Meet which was due to be held at the E.G. Whitlam Centre on Saturday, 19th March has been cancelled due to a lack of Technical Officials.

The Sprint Meet was due to be held following the completion of the 5-8yrs Meet, which will be held at the Whitlam Centre on the same day, however Cumberland had insufficient officials to fill all the positions required to run the meet.

This is not the first time that Cumberland has had trouble getting officials to work at the Sprint Meet. The last two seasons the meet has been held at the Prairiewood Leisure Centre with the bare minimum of officials. This season it had been planned to hold the meet at Merrylands Swimming Centre and our club had offered to provide a good number of officials to work at the meet to ensure it's smooth running. However, Cumberland decided to move the meet to the Whitlam Centre to enable it to be run in conjunction with the 5-8yrs Meet.

The Sprint Meet was to form part of the selection criteria for some of the Cumberland Development Squads but now that will not be the case. The selections will based on performances at the other selection events that have already been held this season.

Our members have achieved some good results at the meet over recent years and hopefully it will make a return to the calendar next year.
