Cumberland District Championships Results 29 February 2004 Peter-Johnston Latest News Merrylands' team of 12 swimmers performed well at this weekend's Cumberland District Championships which were held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. Our team won 5 medals, had 16 finalists and swam 17 personal best times. Troy Tomkinson won 3 medals, taking home silver medals in the Open 100m Butterfly and 16yrs 100m Freestyle and bronze in the 16yrs 100m Backstroke. Robert Griffey won the bronze medal in the Senior 50m Freestyle while our 15yrs & Over 4x50m Freestyle Relay team consisting of Troy Tomkinson, Peter Johnston, Todd Jenkin and Robert Griffey, also took home a bronze. The team will contest 41 individual events and 2 relays over the two days of the Championships. Speedo Sprint Series Heats Results 15 February 2004 Peter-Johnston Latest News Merrylands had some good results at today's Speedo Sprint Series Heats with all our swimmers swimming at least one personal best time. We also had one swimmer qualify for the NSW Speedo Sprint Series Finals. David Wang qualified for the finals for the third year in a row in the 50m Breaststroke, placing second in his age group in a time of 46.70, just outside his P.B. Congratulations to all swimmers and good luck to David at the finals. The Speedo Sprint Series Finals will be held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Sunday, 7th March, 2004. Glad & Jim Pye - NSW Sport Federation Awards 14 February 2004 Peter-Johnston Latest News Glad & Jim Pye were both awarded Distinguished Long Service Awards at the NSW Sport Federation Awards on Tuesday, 10th February, 2004. Glad & Jim received their awards for their more than 30 years of service to all levels of swimming. Full details on their nomination can be found below. Congratulations to Glad & Jim on their awards. Jim Pye/Glad Pye - NSW Swimming Jim and Glad Pye have been active members of the NSW Swimming community for over 35 years. In that time they have seen a countless number of swimmers through our structure and have participated in all levels of our sport. As a husband and wife team they provide a happy smile and more than their fair share of encouragement to up and coming swimmers and officials at all of our meets! Individually, Glad devotes an incredible amount of her time to Swimming on a Club, District and State Level. Glad is a Life Member of Mt Pritchard, Blacktown City and Merrylands Swimming Clubs and has devoted many years to ensuring the development and success of Swimming within these Clubs, the Cumberland District and NSW Schools. Glad has been responsible for the coordination of the Speedo Sprint Series (formerly Shell Series) since 1976, showing an amazing level of dedication and commitment over 27 years. The Speedo Sprint Series is an important entry-level meet with heats conducted in all NSW Swimming Districts leading to a Grand Final Series in Sydney. Glad has been a member of the Competition Committee for six years; is a former member of the Board of Management; and is an accredited Referee. Glad also currently fulfils the invaluable role of presentation officer for all NSW Swimming Championships. She ensures the required medals and ribbons are packaged and ready in advance of the meets and that our presentations run smoothly. One of the highlights of Glad’s Swimming involvement was during the 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games where she worked tirelessly to assist with any duty that was required, both on deck and in the presentation area. In most of Glad’s pool endeavours, Jim can always be found close by. Jim has been a qualified referee since 1974 and has played a strong part in District and State administration in that time. He has been a club delegate to the Cumberland District since 1973 and celebrated an outstanding 25 years as the Cumberland Delegate on the NSW Swimming Metropolitan Committee, before stepping down in July 2003. Jim officiated at his first Australian Championship in 1975 at Perth and still officiates at this level whenever the Championships are held in Sydney. Despite officiating at the highest levels of the sport in this country, Jim has always made himself available to local clubs in his area. It is not a rare occurrence to watch Jim pull out the whistle and referee at any number of small, club or interclub events. Jim and Glad now take a particular interest in school swimming and referee at many zone and regional meets thereby officially recognising the performances of the registered swimmers competing. Some highlights have been the Pacific School Games in 1988 Sydney, 1992 Darwin, 1996 Perth and Sydney 2000. Cumberland Championship Entries 03 February 2004 Peter-Johnston Latest News Entries for the 2003-2004 Cumberland District Open & Age Championships are due in with our Race Secretary by Saturday, 7th February, 2004. The entries are to be on Multi-Entry Cards, which will be available on Saturday. To compete at these championships you must have achieved the required qualifying time. The Entry Times should also be related to the course in which the Meet is to be conducted with the appropriate constant added to the time. Your Multi-Entry cards must be completely filled out including date and place that times were achieved. Entries must also include your registration number.
