50th Anniversary – Back to Merrylands Day

We hope you enjoyed the Back to Merrylands Day celebrations last Saturday.

Thank you to everyone who attended the day including our Life Members, past and current members, families & friends. Unfortunately Ms Julia Finn MP for Granville was unable to attend and had sent her apologies for this. Thanks also to Jann Fathers who visited and helped out refereeing club races.

The celebrations and events held on the day were organised by the club and they could not have happened without a big effort by the Committee members. Thank you to everyone who helped on the day with activities such as cooking the bbq breakfast, running the pool activities, organising and picking up the cake and taking photos.

The club hired an inflatable for the day and it was enjoyed by everyone who attempted to become a Merrylands Ninja Warrior. Additional life guards to man the inflatable during the day were provided by council. It was great to host a special visit by Yampu, the Optus Junior Dolphin, I hear Yampu made a great impression on all the kids, young and not so young!

We still have a number of other events planned to celebrate our 50th Anniversary over the rest of the season. These include:

  • Merrylands 50s - Saturday, 5th January, 2019

  • 50th Anniversary Dinner - Saturday, 6th April, 2019

In addition these members hold a number of other positions and perform roles that ensure the smooth running of our club. Thank you to these members for volunteering for these roles and the time they provide to the club. 7 of these members are life members of the club and they have dedicated many years of service to the club.

There are lots of jobs that need to be done on a Saturday morning. Are you interested in learning how to do any of the following: Chief Time Keeper, Marshal, Starter, Recorder, Timing System Operator, Computer Operator? If so, please speak to Graham.

The more people involved in these roles the smoother club races can run and also cover times when our officials are not available.

As you can see we do have a couple of positions vacant on the committee and we are looking to fill these roles. Previous experience in roles and committee positions are not required. We would love to have a broad cross section of our members volunteering to help steer the direction of the club as we enter the next 50 years.

The races were followed by a BBQ breakfast, novelty events, cake cutting, a giant pool inflatable and a special visit from the Junior Dolphins mascot, Yampu!

50th Anniversary – Back to Merrylands Day

Today we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Merrylands Swimming Centre and Merrylands Amateur Swimming Club.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to our current and past members including our life members, families, friends, community members and Ms Julia Finn MP for Granville. Our club has a rich history serving the community, with many members of the local community having participated in activities such as club races, squad training and learn to swim lessons.

The swimming centre was officially opened on Saturday 9th November, 1968 by the Mayor of Holroyd, Alderman Devlin. The pool cost $365,000 to construct (approx $4,500,000 in 2018 value).

Merrylands Amateur Swimming Club was formed in the same year and originally ran club races on a Friday night during December, January & February. The club had over 250 members registered in the first season – one of the largest in NSW at the time (last season we had 187 members registered – still in the top 10% of clubs in the state). The club’s logo comes from the model whale which was originally the centre-piece of the babies pool.

Mark making splash for 50 years

OVER the past 50 years, generations of swimmers have cooled off from the summer heat, learnt to swim and competed in carnivals at the Merrylands Swim Centre. On Saturday, November 10, the Centre will join the Merrylands Amateur Swim Club (MASC) to celebrate their respective 50th anniversaries with a breakfast and pool party from 7am.

A member of the club for more than 35 years, Merrylands ASC president Graham Edwards invited everyone to help them mark the very special occasion. "Any swimmer, young or old who can swim at least 15 metres, can join in the races and registrations can be made online," he said.

Mr Edwards believes that local swim centres, such as Merrylands, play a key role within the local community, bringing together children, families and adults. "As a swim club we all enjoy and celebrate the successes of our members at all levels," he said. "New members are always welcome and we have swim programs for toddlers, children and adults."

Cumberland Mayor Greg Cummings said 50 years was "a huge milestone for the swim centre, the swim club and the entire community". "Since its opening in 1968, thousands of Cumberland residents have come through the doors of Merrylands Swim Centre to enjoy the facilities," he said.

"All Cumberland residents are invited to join with current and former swim club members for the special anniversary event which will include club races, novelty events and pool inflatables, as well as breakfast. The event is free but regular pool entry costs apply." RSVP for the breakfast via merrylandsasc.asn.au.

Getting ready to celebrate both the 50th anniversary for both the Merrylands pool and the Merrylands Amateur Swim Club, coach Reece Tomkinson, head club coach Peter Johnston and Cumberland Mayor Greg Cummings with coach Alison Johnston and swimmers Helen Macpherson, Summer Shrestha, and Charlie-Rose El Riachi.

Did you know?

The original starting blocks had changed little since the pool was constructed in 1968. Replacement of the starting blocks has been over a year in the making and it has only been due to the hard work of the committee that we have new state-of-the-art blocks today.
The club sourced the majority of the funding to replace the blocks, selected the model of block, placed the order and organised the installation. We are also organising covers to protect them.
The blocks selected (the Omega OSB14) are a similar model to those installed at SOPAC - having the same top - which will give our swimmers the ideal equipment for use in practicing their starts.
So how much did they cost? Each block cost $3,688 - so look after them! We had the last blocks for 50 years, so the new ones need to last a while.

2018 version

In 1972, Merrylands Swimming Centre hosted the swimming events for the 7th Australian Paraplegic and Quadriplegic Games, which doubled as the selection trials for the 1972 Summer Paralympics. In 1977, the centre also hosted swimming events as part of the Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled.

Important Information for Age Championships

With changes this season to the Swimming NSW calendar some of our club Age Championships will be held on different dates, depending on the age group. Swimmers need to check the Championships page for more information.

In particular Boys aged 13 years and Girls aged 12 years on 1st October, 2018 and who age up (have a birthday) before the MSW Area Championships on 17th November, 2018 may be affected with a clash in dates for the Age 200 metres Individual Medley championship (being held on 17th November, 2018). If this is the case you may apply to have your Age Championship race moved to another date. See the club website for more details.

Important Information about Race Entries

Entries for races can be lodged online up to 8.00pm on the Thursday before Saturday races.

If you need to change a race entry already lodged please email race.secretary@merrylandsasc.asn.au

To be eligible to enter championships the swimmer must be financial in this season. The swimmer must have swum the same stroke and same distance during the current season (check the program and plan your swims carefully).

Remember there are limits to the number of swims you can do on a Saturday.

If there is a championship for your age (whether you are swimming in it or not) you can swim:

  • your Age championship
  • the Open championship (subject to having swum in your age championship)
  • 2 other events
  • Senior Handicap (if 17 and over)
  • Relay (if there is one on the program for the day)

If there is NO championship for your age you can swim:

  • 3 events
  • Senior Handicap (if 17 and over)
  • Relay (if there is one on the program for the day)

If you enter too many events your entries for the extra event/s will be withdrawn when the program is prepared for the day.

Merrylands Swim Centre is turning 50!

Merrylands Swim Centre and Merrylands Amateur Swim Club (ASC) are turning 50 and to celebrate Cumberland Council and Merrylands ASC are hosting a breakfast and pool party on Saturday 10 November.

Mayor Greg Cummings said that for 50 years the Merrylands Swim Centre has been a cornerstone of the Cumberland community, where generations of locals have grown up learning to swim, competing in carnivals and cooling off from the summer heat.

“Fifty years is a huge milestone for the swim centre, the swim club and the entire community. Since its opening in 1968, thousands of Cumberland residents have come through the doors of Merrylands Swim Centre to enjoy the facilities,” Mayor Cummings said.

“As one of five pools in Cumberland, Merrylands Swim Centre forms part of the Merrylands Park Regional Sporting Centre and boasts an eight lane 50 metre competition pool, a training pool and a baby pool. Now that summer is here it’s the perfect time to get your togs out and go for a swim; Cumberland pools are open all summer long.

“All Cumberland residents are invited to join with current and former swim club members for the special anniversary event which will include club races, novelty events, pool inflatables, as well as a community breakfast. The event is free but regular pool entry costs apply.”

President of the Merrylands ASC and ASC member for more than 35 years, Graham Edwards believes that local swim centres such as Merrylands Swim Centre play a key role within the local community bringing together children, families and adults.

“As the local population continues to grow and age, the local swim centres are an essential community facility as they provide a range of activities, be that socially, educationally, recreationally and competitively,” Mr Edwards said.

“Swimming is a sport you can do all year round for your entire life, no matter what walk of life you come from. As a swim club we all enjoy and celebrate the successes of our members of all levels. New members are always welcome and we have swim programs for toddlers, children and adults.

“Any swimmer, young or old who can swim at least 15 metres can join in the races and registrations can be made online. We’re inviting everyone join us to help celebrate this milestone, find out what our club is about and have a fun time in the pool.”
