The 2008 winter season begins on Saturday, 5th April, 2008. This year our winter competition will features three new events as well as some old favourites.

In addition to the Mystery Medley and 25m Freestyle Sprint Challenge, a 3x50m Knockout Freestyle Skins, 2x50m Handicap Relay and 2x50m Random Relay have been added to this season's program.

In the Knockout Skins, 4 swimmers go head to head over three 50m sprints with only a 2 minute gap between each one. The catch is the last swimmer to touch the wall in each 50m is knocked out until it is just one-on-one in the final heat.

The Handicap Relay consists of teams of 2 swimmers who are given a time handicap to give all teams a chance of winning the race, while the Random Relay also consists of teams of two swimmers picked by the race committee to create teams of similar speed to also give all teams a chance of winning the race.

If you do another sport during winter, don't worry, most weeks we are finished by 8am so you will have plenty of time to have a swim, so come and join us.

The season will run for 6 weeks until the pool closes on May 11th.

The Winter Season Program is available for download from the Club Races page and the Winter Race By-Laws are available on the Governing Documents page.

  • The End of Cumberland

There has been much discussion and debate over the past two years as Swimming NSW has undergone a process of reviewing and re-organising the current Metropolitan District (Area) Associations and their boundaries.
This process has culminated in what will effectively signal the end of the Cumberland Area in its current form in May this year.

Swimming Cumberland will change name to Swimming Metro South West on May 8th with the following Clubs from the old Cumberland Area being the Founding Members:
    Atlantis Macquarie Fields Penrith
Blacktown City McCredie Park Penrith RSL
    Camden Merrylands Prairiewood
Campbelltown Mount Annan Ripples St Mary's
    Holsworthy Mounties Swimfit Macarthur
    Inswim Myswim Toongabbie
    Liverpool Narellan All Stars Wenden
    Macarthur Indoor Nepean Wentworthville RSL

They will be joined by two Clubs from the old Western Suburbs Area:
    Bankstown Sports Revesby Workers

The remaining six clubs in the north of the current Cumberland Area, these being Hawkesbury, Riverstone, Riverstone Dolphins, Swimwest, Windsor, Wizards will join the existing Castlereagh Area clubs, and become known as Swimming Metro North West.

There is a competition open to everyone in the new Metro South West Area, to come up with a new logo for the Area. Competition will finish on 17th April 2008, at General Meeting for a final decision at AGM. Feel free to enter this competition and make this new emblem the best in NSW.

Throughout the history of the Cumberland Area, our club has had a number of Age Champions, Champions, Medalists, Finalists and Record Holders and has made a valuable contribution to the success of the area's relay teams, squads and administration.
The 8th May will mark the end of an era for swimming in NSW however it will also signal the start of a new chapter with the formation of Metro South West.

  • Merrylands SwimFest Results

The Results of the Merrylands SwimFest are now available.

Thank you to everyone who attended the meet and for your patience as we worked to overcome technical problems with the timing equipment. Unfortunately with the timing equipment hired from, and run by Swimming NSW on the day, the problems were out of our club's control. We hope that despite the technical problems you had an enjoyable day and achieved some good results.

Thank you to all the members of our club and other volunteers who worked at the meet, we couldn't have run it without you and you did a great job under the circumstances with the meet only finishing 20 minutes later than expected.

The results of the meet are now available in the SwimFest section of our website. All medallists who had to leave before their results were finalised will receive their medals in the mail.

  • Speedo Sprint Series Heat Results

Merrylands' team of 11 swimmers performed well at yesterday's Speedo Sprint Series Heats with new personal best times swum in 28 out of 37 events.

For 10 of the swimmers this was their first Speedo Sprint Series and for some, their first meet at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. Dispite this, they managed to overcome their nerves and put into practice what they have been learning at training and club over the past months to take huge chunks of time off their PBs.

In particular, Kelly Broschofsky, Tanya Cleland, James Graham, Belinda Sloane, Timothy Tunks and Taysha Wilson swam personal best times in all of their events.

Congratulations to all our swimmers on their performances.
