Metropolitan Results

Two Merrylands swimmers swam personal best times at this weekend's NSW Metropolitan Championships.

Brittany Johnson put some disappointing swims on Saturday behind her to come back on Sunday and break her 100m Freestyle time by almost 1.3 seconds, finishing in 1:05.33.
Peter Johnston also broke his P.B. taking almost 2 seconds off his time in the 100m Breaststroke to touch in 1:19.97.

Our other swimmers were also very close to their entry times. The full results are now available.

  • NSW Metropolitan Championships

    The 2006 NSW Metropolitan Championships will be held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th March, 2006.

    Our club will be represented by 5 swimmers at the meet, competing in 9 individual events with this year's team featuring a mixture of new and experienced swimmers.
    Anthony Ventra will compete at his first Metropolitan Championships after qualifying at the Cumberland Championships earlier this month. David Wang returns to our Metropolitan team having missed last year's short course season due to injury and Peter Johnston also returns to the long course team having last competed at the long course championships in 2003.
    Todd Jenkin, competing in his third long course championships will contest 3 events at the meet while Brittany Johnson, competing in only her second long course championships will be our only female representative.

    The Results of the Merrylands SwimFest are now available.

  • Speedo Sprint Series Heat Results

    David Wang finished third in the 12yrs 50m Breaststroke at the Speedo Sprint Series Heats yesterday, narrowly missing out on qualifying for the Finals Series.

    David took almost 2 seconds off his 50m Breaststroke time to finish in 39.98, just 3/10ths behind 2nd place. The top 3 swimmers were separated by less than a second. He narrowly missed out on qualifying for the finals in the 50m Freestyle as well finishing third again. David also finished fourth in the 50m Backstroke.

    All of our other swimmers broke at least one P.B. with our swimmers breaking their times in 34 out of 45 events.

  • Speedo Sprint Series Heats

    The Cumberland District Speedo Sprint Series Heats will be held this Sunday at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. Warm-Up is at 12:00pm for an 1:00pm start.

    Merrylands will be sending a team of 13 swimmers to the meet to compete in 45 individual events. Our team consists of:

    David Wang and Anthony Ventra should both go close to making the finals of the series in the 50m Breaststroke, having both finished in the top 10 in the 100m Breaststroke at the Cumberland Championships last weekend.

    The top 2 swimmers from each event at the district heats will progress to the series finals at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Sunday, 12th March, 2006.

    Good luck to all of our swimmers competing at the meet especially the 5 swimmers who are attending their first Speedo Sprint Series. All swimmers are asked to wear a club cap when they compete.
    Those swimmers attending the meet for the first time should read the Competitor Information and State, Metropolitan and Country Championship Procedures.

    Merrylands swimmers won medals in two events at yesterday's Cumberland Championships.

    Todd Jenkin won the bronze medal in the 17yrs & Over 50m Breaststroke, breaking his long course P.B. to finish in 33.59. Our other medalist was the Boys 11-12yrs 4x50m Medley Relay. The team consisting of Greg Stanford, Anthony Ventra, David Wang and Mitchell Burt took over 6 seconds off their entry time to finish 2nd, four hundredths of a second in front of 3rd place. All 4 swimmers in the team also swam under their PBs.

    Our other swimmers also performed well, with 13 finalists out of the 22 events contested.

    Our swimmers also swam 21 personal best times with another 6 unofficial PBs swum in the relays. Mitchell Burt (100m Backstroke, 100m Breaststroke), Anthony Ventra (100m Breaststroke) and Amber Johnson (100m Backstroke) all swam two PBs in one event, breaking both their 50m and 100m times in their 100m events.

    The entries for our annual swimming meet, the Merrylands SwimFest Swim Meet close on Saturday, 11th February, 2006.
    This is our carnival so please make sure you support it either as a swimmer or an official.

    The meet will be held at Merrylands Swimming Centre on Sunday, 26th February. This year's meet will again feature electronic timing and anti-wave lane ropes.

    Merrylands Amateur Swimming Club is proud to be announced as a recipient of the 2005 Telstra Swimming Assistance Fund.

    Through the fund the club has received some much needed equipment that will be used as part the club's Learn to Swim, Club Races and Training programs. 99 grants were awarded from 269 applications across the country.

    The club has also received a "Green" Award as part of Swimming Australia's GoClub program.

    The 2006 Telstra Australian Swimming Championships begin at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Monday.

    The Championships will feature Australia's golden girls from last year's World Championships – Jodie Henry, Libby Lenton, Alice Mills, Leisel Jones, Giaan Rooney, Jessicah Schipper and host of emerging new stars along with the return of Ian Thorpe.

    The Championships will be held from January 30th to February 3 and will double as the selection trials for the 2006 Commonwealth Games and 2006 Pan Pacific Championships teams.

    Nine's Wide World of Sports and Fox Sports will also be showing live coverage of the finals sessions on the six-day program.
