Australian Age Championships 08 April 2002 Peter-Johnston Latest News Troy Tomkinson will represent Merrylands at this week’s Australian Age Championships. This year the championships are being held at the Sydney Aquatic Centre from April 9 to 13, 2002. This year will be the second year that Troy has competed at the Nationals after placing 5th in the 50m Freestyle in Melbourne last year. This year Troy will again be competing in 3 events at the championships. He will contest the 50m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly on Tuesday, April 9th and the 100m Freestyle on Saturday, April 13th. Australian Championships 25 March 2002 Peter-Johnston Latest News Sydney looks set to host the Australian Swimming Championships next year after conditions at the Chandler Aquatic Centre were compared to that of a sauna. The opening day of the competition was held in unseasonally hot conditions with the temperature rising to 33 degrees. The high temperatures and lack of air conditioning in the centre were widely blamed for Ian Thorpe narrowly missing his own world record in the 400m Freestyle on Monday night. Brisbane was a firm favourite to host the next 3 national titles before they move to Melbourne in 2006 to double as the Commonwealth Games trials. But the problems with the air conditioning and the starting blocks, which had to be repaired half way through the meet, have prompted a re-think about the venue for next year’s championships. Two other Australian Swimming Meets are set to be held in Sydney over the next 6 months. The QANTAS Skins have been moved forward in the calendar to Friday, June 21st, 2002 from it's traditional date in early December. The Telstra Grand Prix will also return to Sydney in July. Cumberland Sprint Meet 23 March 2002 Peter-Johnston Latest News Merrylands collected 16 medals at the Cumberland Sprint Meet held at the E.G. Whitlam Centre today. Both Nathan Legge and Amber Johnson won their first Cumberland medals. Nathan won the Silver medal in the 9yrs 50m Freestyle while Amber won the Bronze medal in the 9yrs 50m Butterfly. Other medallists at the meet included Jessica Burden, Rachel Johnston, Jordan Burden, Mitchell McFarlane, Troy Tomkinson, Robert Griffey and Peter Johnston. The full results are now available. Restricted Age Series Finals 17 March 2002 Peter-Johnston Latest News At Auburn Swimming Centre today, Etiuate Veamatahau won his first medal at the Restricted Age Finals. ET won the bronze medal in the 12yrs 50m Freestyle in a time of 29.49. He also qualified for the Grand Finals of the 50m Backstroke and 50m Butterfly placing 4th and 9th in the events. Our other two swimmers at the finals, Mitchell Emery and David Wang, competed in the 50m Breaststroke events. Mitchell broke his PB twice in the 11yrs 50m Breaststroke on his way to placing 5th in the Grand Final in a time of 41.74. David narrowly missed out on a place in the Grand Final of the 8yrs & Under 50m Breaststroke after finishing 11th overall in the preliminaries. Congratulations to all 3 swimmers. 2002 Australian Championships 09 March 2002 Peter-Johnston Latest News The 2002 Australian Championships will be held at the Chandler Aquatic Centre in Brisbane from March 17-23, 2002. This year the Championships double as the selection trials for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and the 2002 Pan Pacific Championships. Channel Nine’s Wide World of Sports will be showing live coverage of the finals each night of the Championships. As with last year we will be screening the Saturday night finals session in the Club Room on March 23rd at 7:00pm. This year we will again be having some trivia during the ad breaks. Tickets will go on sale next Saturday and will cost $2 per person. A BBQ dinner will also be available but must be pre-ordered. Restricted Age Results 02 March 2002 Peter-Johnston Latest News Merrylands will have 3 swimmers competing at the NSW Restricted Age Series Finals after some outstanding results at today’s Cumberland District Restricted Age Heats. Etiuate Veamatahau (ET) won all 3 of his events and will represent the club in the 12yrs 50m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke and 50m Butterfly at the finals. David Wang, despite being sick, still managed to win the 8yrs & Under 50m Breaststroke, improving two places from last week’s Cumberland 5 to 8yrs Meet. Mitchell Emery will be our third swimmer at the finals after placing second in the 11yrs 50m Breaststroke. He improved on his third place at the Cumberland Championships to qualify for the Restricted Age Series Finals for the second time. A number of other swimmers had some great swims including Ryan Doherty and Mitchell McFarlane. Ryan did huge PBs in all 3 of his events and placed 10th in the 8yrs & Under 50m Breaststroke swimming as a 7 year old. Mitchell also broke 3 of his entry times and placed 4th in the 11yrs 50m Freestyle. Congratulations to all swimmers who broke their times and good luck to ET, David and Mitchell at the finals. Restricted Age Series Heats 27 February 2002 Peter-Johnston Latest News The Cumberland District Restricted Age Series Heats will be held this Saturday at the Sydney Aquatic Centre. Warm-Up is at 10:30am for an 11:30am start. Merrylands will be sending a team of 26 swimmers to the meet. Two of our top swimmers, Troy Tomkinson and Jordan Burden, will not be attending the meet and will therefore not qualify for the finals. This means our swimmer with the best chance of reaching the finals is Mitchell Emery in the 11yrs 50m Breaststroke. Mitchell won the bronze medal in the 100m Breaststroke at the Cumberland Championships two weeks ago and has won the gold medal in the Shell Age Series* in the past. Two other swimmers to watch, who may go close to qualifying for the finals are Etiuate Veamatahau and David Wang. Etiuate (ET) recently placed 4th in the 12yrs 100m Freestyle at the Cumberland Championships. David won the bronze medal in the 8yrs 50m Breaststroke at last weekend’s Cumberland 5 to 8yrs Meet. He also placed 4th in the 50m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly and 5th in the 50m Backstroke at the meet. The top 2 swimmers from each event at the district heats will progress to the series finals at Auburn Swimming Centre on Sunday, 17th March, 2002.
