Welcome back to our first week of Club Races at Merrylands! We have a busy season planned and an action-packed morning for our first week of Club, with Races, Novelty Events and a BBQ.

First though, an update on everything that has happened since our last week at Merrylands in March…

Bringing you up to date…

It has been a busy 6 months with some great achievements by our swimmers:

April

• 3 PBs from our 1 swimmer at the Metro South West 5-8yrs Meet
• A dozen members attended our beach life-saving day
• 9 of our swimmers competed at the Australian Masters Championships in Sydney, bagging 22 medals and 24 new PBs
• We held our first Short Course club races at Guildford, with a stack of PBs, followed by pizza.

May

• Our team of 15 swimmers swam 35 new PBs at the Metro South West Short Course Championships, with 2 medals and 12 finalists
• Presentation Evening and AGM held with the new Committee elected.

June

• 18 swimmers were recognized with Junior Excellence Awards from Swimming Australia

July

• 5 swimmers represented the club at the Metropolitan Short Course Championships
• Tim Oliver travelled to Turkey for a trial event of the new 5th discipline for Modern Pentathlon and then competed at the Swiss Open Modern Pentathlon Championships.
• Varant Jambazian headed to Armenia to represent Australia at the 11th Pan Homenetmen Games

August

• 3 swimmers represented the club at the Senior State Age Short Course Championships

September

• We held our second Short Course Club Races with some big PBs highlighting the work the swimmers have put in at training, followed by pizza and brownies (yum).
• 2 medals from 1 swimmer at the Masters Long Distance Championships
• 3 big PBs from Joseph Assi at the NSW Development Meet

Championships

Club Championships start in just 2 weeks on 22^nd October. Remember, to enter a Championship, you must have swum that stroke and that distance in the current season to be eligible to enter.

Make sure you download a copy of the program from the website and plan your swims so you don’t miss out.

Tip: Don’t leave qualifying until the last minute – get your qualification swims completed as soon as possible.

Membership Cards

The Pool Staff may ask for proof of your club membership when purchasing your pool entry or your 20-visit pass. You can download a copy of your membership card from Swim Central to show to the staff if requested. Instructions are here.

Parramatta Inter-Club Cup

The Inter-Club Cup is back for 2022! We will take on Parramatta City and McCredie Park right here at Merrylands Swimming Centre on Saturday, 12^th November. This is a great event for all our members with events from 7yrs & Under through to 50yrs & Over, and we need everyone’s help to re-take the cup!

Entries are open to both Full Swimmers and Club Only Swimmers, so enter today!

Thanks to a grant from NSW Office of Sport, there is no cost to enter this year, and we will be providing food after the meet.

If you hold a Recreational Swimmer membership you will need to upgrade to at least a Club Swimmer to participate.

Entries close on Wednesday, 9^th November – don’t be late!

Technical Officials

Welcome back to all of our technical officials. For those who are non-swimming members don’t forget to renew your Dry/Support membership to ensure your technical accreditation remains current.

This Week at Club Races

• Relay Time Trials start this week. You have 3 weeks to get your team organised before the competition starts on 5^th November
• Check the Meet Program so you know what events, heats and lanes you are swimming in.
• Novelty events and relays will be held, after the normal races, followed by a free BBQ.

Bring a Friend

Did you know your friends can Come & Try club races for up to 4 weeks without being a member? Just get them to sign up through our website.

Club Captains

Nominations for the positions of Male and Female Club Captains are open and close at 9.30am on week 4 (29^th October, 2022). Information about the duties and responsibilities of Club Captains can be found on the club website in the By-Laws.

All financial first claim members can vote for these positions on week 6 (12^th November, 2022).

Free Membership for 8yrs & Under

Thanks to a grant received from Club Merrylands swimmers aged 8yrs & Under, who regularly swim in our club races may be eligible to receive a reimbursement on their membership fees. For more information on eligibility criteria and how to claim reimbursement is on our website.

Club Uniforms

We have a great range of club uniforms available for sale. These can be purchased through the club’s online shop.

Some items require special orders to be placed, so minimum numbers may be required before orders for these items can be placed with the supplier.

Season Conclusion

Another club season comes to an end. Once again not much of a summer weatherwise, but another season full of great results from our swimmers. I looked back over the end of last season and we had heavy rainfall then as well, as this photo shows from the 1500m Championship morning.

Despite losing a couple of Saturday mornings during the season we have been able to complete our full program of Championships together with a lot of external meets. The Competition Committee has worked tirelessly to ensure the race program came together and made changes as needed to fit everything in.

Thankyou to everyone who has helped during the season. Running club races every week requires the help of everyone and your participation is greatly appreciated. Thankyou to our Committee again worked hard preparing for the season and throughout the season. We also welcomed two new Club Captains this season. Thank you to Darla Assi and Matthew Vicic for your work throughout the season.

Squad Training

Training moves to Guildford Swimming Centre next week (from Monday, 28^th March, 2022). Sessions will be held in the outdoor pool and are scheduled to return to Merrylands in October.

Club AGM & Annual Presentation

We have confirmed dates for the club’s AGM and Annual Presentation this year.

AGM

The AGM will be held on Monday 16^th May, 2022 in the club room. The meeting will commence at 7.30pm and we encourage all members to attend the meeting.

As you know the Committee has not changed much over many years now and we really encourage members to consider taking on a Committee role, as the future of the club is directed by the Committee. All positions are open for nomination. To nominate for a Committee position you simply need to complete a nomination form by Saturday 16^th April 2022.

Annual Presentation

The Annual Presentation will be held on Saturday 21^st May, 2022 at Club Merrylands (in the first floor function room). The room will be open from 6.00pm, with presentation commencing at 6.30pm.

Club Merrylands kindly provide our club with use of the function room for our presentation and we encourage you to support the club by enjoying the meal options at the club either before or following the presentation.

Swimming NSW Senior Metropolitan Championships

Last weekend our club was represented by Alison Johnston, Vanessa Ozols & Matthew Vicic. A number of PB’s were swum, as well as finalist results being achieved. Congratulations to you all. A full report of the meet can be found here.

Swimming NSW Junior State Age Championships

Joseph Assi represents the club in the 50m & 100m Breaststroke events this weekend. Good luck Joseph and may the whale be with you. 🐳

Club Merrylands Sunday Funday – Sunday 27^th March 2022

Looking for something to keep the kids occupied ?? Club Merrylands is holding a Sunday Funday at Guildford Bowling Club (97 Bursill Street, Guildford) tomorrow from 11.30am.

Social Event – Surf & Open Water visit – Saturday 23^rd April 2022

A surf and open water event has been arranged with Narrabeen Surf Club and is being held on Saturday 23^rd April at Narrabeen Beach.

The event will commence at 10.00am, so we recommend you arrive at the beach around 9.30am.

1500m Open Championships – 26^th March

Next Saturday is the last morning of club races and it culminates with the 1500m Open Championships and a breakfast at the conclusion of races.

A reminder that races commence at 6.30am (not 7.00am) so we really need everyone at the pool earlier on the morning to assist with set up, timekeeping etc, even if your family members are not swimming the 1500m event as we will need to have timekeepers for all lanes with swimmers.

Swimming NSW Senior Metropolitan Championships

This weekend our club is being represented by three swimmers at the SNSW Senior Metropolitan Championships being held at SOPAC. Good luck to Vanessa Ozols, Alison Sakurovs & Matthew Vicic for your swims and may the whale be with you all

Perpetual Trophy Return

As the season draws to a conclusion we ask that you return any perpetual trophies you have to the club room prior to the end of March so the trophies can be prepared for the upcoming Annual Presentation.

Club Merrylands have lifted their COVID-19 Vaccination Policy of only allowing the double vaccinated into the Club’s premise, as of 17^th March 2022.

Double vaccination is no longer a condition of entry to the club.

Whales Challenge

Last Saturday saw the 3^rd and final Whales Challenge swum for the season. The White “Emery” team took a 2 – 0 lead over the Maroon “Turner” team going into the final event.

The point score changed hands a few times, but it was the White team who prevailed in the end with 1,050 points to Maroons 1,001 points. This gave the White team a 3-0 clean sweep this season. Congratulations to everyone who swam for the White team this season.

Swimming NSW State Open Championships

Last weekend Vanessa Ozols represented the club swimming at the SNSW State Open Championships. Vanessa swam in the 50m Freestyle (with a season best time) & 100m Breaststroke (new PB & 8^th placing) events. Congratulations on your swims Vanessa.

The last morning of club races on Saturday 26^th March culminates with the 1500m Open Championships.

A reminder that these races commence at 6.30am (not 7.00am) so we really need everyone at the pool earlier on the morning to assist with set up, timekeeping etc, even if your family members are not swimming the 1500m event.

We will also be holding a breakfast at the conclusion of races to wrap up the end of the season.

As we reported in February, Denise Assi (Social Secretary) has been communicating with Narrabeen Surf Club to arrange an educational and fun day out at a surf beach at the end of this season.

We do not have a confirmed date yet but we hope you will be able join us on the day. Put a reminder in your calendar for April and keep an eye out for more information and we will provide more details as soon as we have them available.

Wet Weather

Given the weather in Sydney over the past few weeks it appears swimming is becoming a must-have skill as we dodge puddles and the constant rain. Just getting into the pool can be a swimming marathon!

Merrylands SwimFest

We did get a bit of a break with the weather for the Merrylands SwimFest, with a cloudy day and only a light shower at times. We had over 200 swimmers attend the SwimFest and received positive feedback about the meet again.

The golden ray of sunshine on the day was the performance of our Merrylands team of swimmers. Our team of 26 swimmers achieved 44 PB’s with 4 gold, 11 silver & 14 bronze medals won. A big thank you to everyone who organised and helped at the SwimFest. We cannot run a meet like this without the help of our dedicated committee, parents, carers and friends.

Metro South West Area Championships

Last weekend we had a team of 15 swimmers represent our club at the MSW Long Course Area Championships.

Our swimmers again represented the club in outstanding fashion with PB’s, finalists, medals and Metropolitan QT’s swum. Congratulations to the team of swimmers & coaches.

March Merrylands Highlights

We have now entered the last month of our club season. How quick has the season gone. See the Upcoming Championships & Meet Calendar for the remaining events, but a couple of reminders:

• 3^rd & final Whales Challenge today. Can the White team achieve a clean sweep or will the Maroon team end the season with a victory?
• A short 4 week Learn to Swim program will be run during March
• 800m Freestyle Open Championships on 12^th March
• 1500m Freestyle Open Championships on 26^th March
• Breakfast & last club morning on 26^th March

Merrylands SwimFest

This afternoon we are holding the Merrylands SwimFest. We have a team of 28 swimmers representing our club in 134 individual races plus 5 relay teams, so a big day for our club members. Good luck to everyone in our team and may the whale be with you all.

 All swimmers need to be at the pool stretched and ready to commence the warm-up swim at 1.30pm. Races start at 2.30pm.

We have a big afternoon with the meet at capacity entries, so we need the assistance of all parents & carers on the day with a range of tasks to be carried out before, during and after the meet. We will undertake some set up straight after club races tomorrow (put our club lane ropes in, replace the 5m flags etc) and we will then be back from 12.00pm to set up the other items (gazebos, touch pads etc). So we ask for all parents and carers to be at the pool to assist with the set up and the pack up straight after the event.

Speedo Sprint Heats

Our team of 16 swimmers had an outstanding meet representing our club the Speedo Sprint Series last Sunday. 

A total of 42 new PB’s were achieved and there were a number of top 10 finishes. A great result and effort by our swimmers and coaches. Congratulations to everyone on the results achieved.

Starlight Super Swim

As we have mentioned during the month, Ian Wilson is participating in the Starlight Super Swim event being swum over the 28 days of February. The challenge is to swim as many klms as you can and raise funds for the Starlight Foundation.

Ian is well into the swim and as at 17^th February he has swum over 17klms and raised $635 in donations. Ian’s target is to swim at least 20 klms (he is well on the way to smashing through this target) and his goal is to raise over $1,000 in donations for the foundation.

Social Event – Surf & Open Water visit

Our Social Committee has been discussing the potential of arranging an education and fun day out at a surf beach at the end of this season.

As a number of our club members compete in open water events it was felt that obtaining practical knowledge to better understand surf conditions and how to improve techniques in open water compared to an enclosed pool may be beneficial whilst also enjoying a social day out as a club.

Some of the outcomes we have considered are:

• learning basic water safety and lifesaving skills required to be safe around an open water environment;
• providing a basic knowledge about swimming at beaches;
• standing position in waist deep water and how to recover to a secure position;
• swimming between the flags and understanding the beach conditions;
• reading rip current conditions and how to survive in the event of being caught in a rip;
• what it takes to become a life saver.

Denise Assi (Social Secretary) has been communicating with a contact and we are hopeful of arranging a day with Narrabeen Surf Club to undertake the event. Given the number of swim meets coming over the next 6 weeks we are looking at some time in April to hold the event.

We are happy for any feedback or comments you may have about the idea and ask that you discuss these with Denise Assi so we can consider them at our next Committee meeting (early March)

Relay Competition

A couple of timely reminders for this competition:

• Weekly swimmer nominations need to be submitted prior to the team swimming each week. This form nominates the 4 swimmers of the team that will swim on the day. Complete the form here.
• No use of timing is to be used during the race (no watching the timekeepers stopwatch or pacing along the pool deck etc). Teams found doing this will be disqualified from the race.

Vale – Tascha Sinclair

This week we received news that a former club member and Club Captain had sadly passed away.

Tascha Sinclair was a club member in the 1980/90’s and was Club Captain in 1990, 1992 & 1993. As an active club member Tasha was awarded the Lions Club trophy in 1985/86 and 1990/91.

Tasha won her age championships over a number of years, including the 11 years (1985/86), 12 years (1986/87), 13 years (1987/88), 14 years (1988/89), 15 years & Open Womens (1989/90), 16 years (1990/91) & Senior Womens 1992/93.

Tascha’s mum, Val was also an active club and committee member over many years.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Tasha’s family.

Cole Classic 2022

The 2022 Cole Classic was swum at Manly last Sunday and a number of our club members swam in the 1 klm, 2klm o& 5klm races.

Upcoming Swim Meets

There are a number of upcoming swim meets that will keep our swimmers busy training and competing over the coming months.

Speedo Sprint Series – Sunday 13^th February

The Speedo Sprint Series caters for girls and boys aged between 8-13 years in 50m Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke and Butterfly events and is a great way to have fun and learn new skills in a friendly environment.

The meet will be held at SOPAC. Entries close Thursday 3^rd February.

We encourage all of our club swimmers in the 8-13 year age groups to enter the meet and we look forward to having a large team at SOPAC for the meet.

Merrylands SwimFest – Saturday 19^th February

This our club’s major meet for the season and will be held at Merrylands Swimming Centre. Entries are open online and close on Saturday, 5^th February. This is our club's major carnival so it is expected that all club swimmers will attend the meet.

We will of course require the assistance of all of our swimmers parents & carers, so please see Graham to confirm you are available to assist on the day.

Metro South West Area Championships - Saturday 26^th February & Sunday 27^th February

This is our areas major championship meet and will be held at SOPAC. Entries close Wednesday 16^th February.

COVID-19 Safety Protocols

With COVID-19 currently being active in our local community it is important that everyone take steps to reduce the risk of transmission and remain up to date on the conditions of entry.

We have a number of club championships still to be held this season and interruptions to individual swimmers plans may occur. The ability to swim eligibility swims for championship events may be affected so we strongly recommend that swimmers plan and undertake their eligibility swims as early in the season as possible, rather than leaving these swims to the last week available before the Championship event is to be swum.

A reminder that a failure by a swimmer to swim an eligibility swim will preclude their participation in that Championship.

Welcome to 2022

We wish everyone a happy and safe 2022.

With the swimming centre closed over the past weekends it’s a later resumption of club races in 2022 than we had planned. Changes have been made to the race program, with the Butterfly championships planned for last Saturday being swum this morning. Good luck to all swimmers competing in these championships.

Swim Meet Results

The Swimming NSW Junior Metropolitan Championships were held at SOPAC just before Christmas. Our club was represented by 3 swimmers, Joseph Assi, Unish Shrestha & Chloe Ton.

Joseph Assi and Unish Shrestha both swam in the 50m Breaststroke. Joseph swam a new personal best time and Unish finished in his second fastest time, just outside the PB he achieved the week before.

Joseph saved his best until last in the 100m Breaststroke. Joseph took over a second off his time and came 10th, achieving his first Metropolitan Finalist result.

Chloe Ton achieved a personal best time in the 50m Freestyle in her first Metropolitan Championships.

There have also been a number of Open Water Championships swum over the past few weeks.

Swimming NSW State Open Water Championships

These were held in late December 2021 at the Sydney International Regatta Centre. Matthew Vicic represented our club and swam a time of 1:15:33.13, taking 2½ minutes off his previous time for this event.

Metro South West Open Water Championships

These were held on Sunday 9^th January 2022 at the Sydney International Regatta Centre. Our club was represented by 7 swimmers with 4 (Unish, Daniel, Joseph & Joab) swimming in the first open water competition.

Results in the age groups were:

Nevah Shrestha (8^th - 2.5klm)
Unish Shrestha (3^rd – 2.5klm)

Information & Conditions for Attendees

With COVID-19 currently being active in our local community it is important that everyone take steps to reduce the risk of transmission.

These steps include:

• Any swimmer, volunteer, coach or spectator who is feeling unwell in any way, or has symptoms or signs of COVID-19 must not attend until full recovery has taken place
• Attendees are encouraged to wear a face mask where physical distancing is not possible
• All swimmers should follow the ‘get in, swim, get out’ approach and should avoid showering/using changeroom facilities where possible. Come ready to swim, and leave the pool as soon as possible
• Access to the Club Room and Old Club Room is restricted
• Swimmers are required to have all their own equipment. Swimmers are not permitted to share equipment or drink bottles. Food and drink should not be shared
