The heats of the 2007 NSW Speedo Sprint Series will be held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Sunday, 11th February, 2007.

For more than 25 years the Speedo Sprint Series (formerly Shell Age Series) has been an important entry-level meet and has been many swimmers first swimming meet outside their club races.
Swimmers also get the chance to compete in the same pool that was used for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Due to it's timing, the meet, along with the Merrylands SwimFest, also provides good practice for School Swimming Carnivals.

Our club has also had good results at the meet over the years with swimmers progressing to the finals in 4 out of the last 5 years.

This heats session is only for the swimmers in our District (Cumberland). This year, the medalists from the State Championships are ineligible to compete and the top 3 swimmers from each event move through to the Finals on Sunday, 18th March.

Entries for the Speedo Sprint Series close on Saturday, 20th January, 2007.

See the posters on the notice board in the club room for details or visit the Swim Meets section of our website.

If you have not attended a meet before and would like some more information or help on entering, just ask one of the Club Committee Members.

  • Win a spot in the NSW ANZ Talent Pool

ANZ, as a partner of the 12th FINA World Championships, is offering children aged between 8 and 12 years old the opportunity to win a place in the ANZ Talent Pool.

The Talent Pool is a series of junior aquatic clinics, hosted by ANZ, and being held across Australia in the lead up to the Championships, which take place in Melbourne in March 2007.

The first ANZ Talent Pool will be held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, from 9am on Saturday 27 January 2007, and will feature the ANZ All Stars inlcuding former world swimming champion, Giaan Rooney, and vice-captain of the Australian men’s water polo team, Trent Franklin.

Designed to give children the opportunity to have their very own World Championship experience, the Talent Pools offer a glimpse of the five aquatic disciplines of the World Championships - Swimming, Diving, Synchronised Swimming, Water Polo and Open Water Swimming.

On the day, children will have the chance to chat to Rooney and Franklin about their World Championship experiences, and will take part in 30 minute sessions for each discipline, all under the watchful eye of accredited coaches.

By the end of the Talent Pool, children will have been introduced to the finer points of take-offs and diving techniques, dolphin wiggles and swim breathing, synchro kicks and basic body position and will receive a master class in Water Polo. This is courtesy of ANZ All Star and Men’s Water Polo team Vice-Captain, Trent Franklin.

For your chance to win a place in the ANZ Talent Pool, go to the ANZ website http://www.anz.com/talentpools. All entries in the competition will require the consent of a parent or guardian.

But hurry, entries close on Monday, 15th January, 2007.

  • Glad & Jim Pye Honoured

Glad and Jim Pye, two long standing Life Members of Merrylands Amateur Swimming Club, were recognised for their service to the club at a special ceremony at Merrylands Swimming Centre this morning.

Glad and Jim have been members of our club since it was formed in 1968. They have been tireless workers at all levels of swimming, from club through to national level, for nearly 40 years. Their service to our club in particular was recognised today with the naming of the Club Room at Merrylands Swimming Centre in their honour.

In the presence of many current and former members of the club, family, friends and dignitaries, the "Glad and Jim Pye Club Room" was officially named by the Mayor of Holroyd, Councillor Dr John Brodie.

Both very emotional, Glad and Jim, together with the Mayor, unveiled a new plaque on the club room to mark the event.

The ceremony began with a high level of anticipation at the pool. In order to keep the naming of the club room a surprise for Glad and Jim, only a select number of members new what was going to be announced by the Mayor. However it didn't take long for all those present to realise we were there to honour two very well loved club members.

Glad and Jim's respective achievements were recounted before the official unveiling, with a number of impressive achievements listed to rounds of applause. (Their full biographies can be found in the Life Members section of our website).

The club would like to thank Glad and Jim for their years of service to our club and also thank the Staff and Councillors of Holroyd City Council for all of their support with this project.
