Merrylands' four swimmers performed well at this weekend's Cumberland Short Course Championships despite a disrupted preparation.

All of our swimmers swam at least one personal best time with a total of 8 PBs from 15 swims. We also had finalists in 9 events. All of this after only one full week of pool training over the last 7 weeks due to the closure of Wentworthville Pool.

Our first PB of the meet didn't come until Session 3, when Peter Johnston took over a second off his time in the Open 200m Breaststroke. But from then on, our swimmers swam personal best times in 7 out of the remaining 10 events.
Amber Johnson took just under a second off her 50m Breastroke time and broke her 100m Freestyle time by over 3 seconds. Todd Jenkin broke his 50m Freestyle time to go under 27 seconds for the first time while Peter Johnston went under 32 seconds for the first time in the 50m Butterfly.
Brittany Johnson did PBs in all three of her events, breaking her times in the 50m Freestyle, 50m Butterfly and finishing off the meet with a 3.5 second PB in the 200m Individual Medley.

Our finalists at the meet included:

    Brittany Johnson
    50m Freestyle (8th)
    50m Butterfly (6th)
    200m Individual Medley (8th)
    Todd Jenkin
    50m Freestyle (10th)
    50m Breaststroke (5th)
    100m Breaststroke (6th)
    Peter Johnston
    50m Freestyle (10th)
    50m Breaststroke (9th)
    50m Butterfly (7th)

  • Farewell Kristen

Merrylands swimming pool was alive on Friday 1st July where young and old, new and retired members and friends of Merrylands Swimming Club came together to farewell a long time coach and friend, Kristen Sunner.

Swimmers from Kristen’s early days as a coach at McCredie Park, to swimmers from the beginning at Merrylands and to swimmers and families of the present were all there to celebrate Kristen’s time as coach.

All the swimmers joined in a photo with Kristen to mark the memories. We all enjoyed a lovely meal, thanks to the Cheryl and everyone who brought along a plate of food.

Speeches were made and presents distributed. Kristen summed up her coaching career and Todd, Brittany, Amber and Greta made a lovely speech on behalf of all the swimmers and club members. Kristen was presented with a Merrylands club shirt signed by all the swimmers, past and present as a momento.

The night was a lot of fun with lots of jokes told and stories swapped. It was really good to see a lot of old members return to join the party, to show just how much impact one person can have on so many lives. Everyone had an awesome night; a big thank you to Cheryl for putting on the evening. On behalf of everyone I would like to thank Kristen for all her time spent with the club and her dedication to all swimmers young and old. She will be missed greatly and has left a big gap to fill.
