Season Is Underway

It was great to welcome so many swimmers to our first week of club races last week (we had over 40 swimmers entered) and the weather was kind to us, although the wind did make it a bit cool during the morning.

Thank you for your help in complying with the range of COVID-19 protocols we have in place. It is important that we abide by our safety plan to ensure the health of everyone and the ability to continue our club events.

Whales Tales is an important way to keep up-to-date with information and events. I encourage you to sign up to automatically receive the electronic version on a Saturday morning. Current & past editions are also available.

Remember the season program can be found here. Please take time to review the season program and plan your swims early.

Learn to Swim

The club Learn to Swim program is commencing. Lessons will start next week.

Club Race Entries

Entries for club races are only accepted online and they close at 8.00pm Thursday. So plan your swims and ensure your entries are completed in time.
The Time Record Sheet is a handy reference to record your swims during the season and a quick reference point to check if you have completed swims to qualify for championship races. You can download the sheet at here.

Membership

All the information you need on club membership for this year is available here. We are happy to advise that membership fees have not changed this year, and free membership is again available for swimmers 8 & Under, thanks to Club Merrylands.

Technical Officials

Remember if you are a qualified technical official (and a non-swimmer) to renew your non-swimmer membership to ensure your technical accreditation remains current.

Club Captains

Nominations for the positions of Male and Female Club Captains are open and close at 9.30am on week 4 (31st October, 2020). Information about the duties and responsibilities of Club Captains can be found on the club website in the By-Laws.

All financial first claim members can vote for these positions on week 6 (14th November, 2020).

COVID-19 Safety Plan & Protocols

Sign-In for Spectators & Volunteers

The club operates under a COVID-19 Safety Plan and it is continually updated as health guidelines change. Health guidelines play an important role in setting the protocols the club is required to comply with.

We ask for your assistance in complying with the protocols & plan in place. We will communicate changes as they occur and these updates can be found here.

Please remember:

  • Anyone (coach/athlete/parent/official/spectator) who is unwell for any reason should not attend any training, competition or club activity;
  • If you become unwell whilst at the pool please advise us and leave immediately;
  • Protect yourself and others from getting sick by following good personal hygiene practices and maintaining physical distancing. We have hand sanitiser available for your use;
  • Swimmers should not share any equipment including googles, drink bottles or towels;
  • Maintain social distancing when at the swimming centre. We have designated areas around the pool and ask for your assistance in complying with these;
  • If you wish to wear a mask whilst at the pool we recommend that you bring this with you;
  • Download the COVID-19 app to assist with contact tracing if it is required.

As health guidelines can change rapidly we need to be able to contact all of our members electronically. Your contact details are important to us and we need them to be up-to-date at all times.

A reminder of important changes this season are:

  • No manual card entries will be accepted. Club Race entries can only be done through Swim Central;
  • No cash payments will be accepted. Purchases need to be made online through the online shop;
  • No raffles or bbq breakfasts at present. Changes to these may be made as health guidelines are updated;
  • We must keep a record of all people attending club events (club races and training sessions) for contact tracing purposes.
  • Competitors are recorded automatically through their online race entry so they do not need to sign in on a Saturday morning;
  • Officials, Volunteers & Spectators (who aren’t competing in races) must sign in at the pool entry (Council has an app option or paper form to complete). In addition, the club is required to also record attendees, so we ask that you sign in using the QR code (see the QR code in the Whales Tales) to complete an online form each time you attend a club event. We will have a sign-in area for this;
  • Normal pool entry applies and you will need to scan your Council pool card for entry;
  • No club room access. Access is limited for only obtaining equipment required to be used. This means that no-one should enter the club room and equipment should not be stored along the front verandah area;
  • We recommend you leave the swimming centre after completing club races. Council is allowing recreational swimming, subject to maximum numbers allowed at any one time, however we believe it is in your health interests to leave the centre after club races.

Your Contact Information

As health guidelines can change rapidly we need to be able to contact all of our members electronically. Your contact details are important to us and we need them to be up-to-date at all times.

Please check your swim central profile and ensure your contact details (parents & children) are up-to-date.

Relay Competition

The team relay has commenced with the first time trials last week. There are two more time trials and the first point score races commence on Saturday 31st October.

It’s time to organise your team with a maximum of 6 team members only (thanks Merry Ladies 😊).

Relay team nominations are to be submitted online each week (naming the 4 swimmers for that week).

Club Uniforms

We have a great range of club uniforms available for sale. These can be purchased through the club’s online shop. If you have any questions about club uniforms please talk to the Property Officer (Margaret Edwards).

Squad Enrolment

It’s time to complete your squad enrolment if you haven’t already done so. See the details here.

Championship Eligibility

The Club By-Laws set out the Eligibility to Compete in Championships (By-Law 21). Some key points to remember are:

  • Only Financial First Claim Members are eligible to compete in Championships;
  • Entrants must have swum that stroke and that distance in the current season.

It is therefore important to plan your swims so that you have swim the stroke and distance if you plan to compete in the Championship for that stroke and distance. The season program sets out the Championship dates to allow appropriate planning of your swims.

There are many situations that may arise which impact on swimmers plans. These situations may mean for example that the pool is closed for club races or the individual swimmer may have circumstances which preclude them from swimming at a particular time (for example COVID-19 health guidelines constantly being changed and updated). All members must continue to comply with health guidelines that are in place and there may be circumstances arise which impact on your ability to swim the stroke and distance in eligibility preparation.

As such the Committee strongly recommends that swimmers plan and undertake their eligibility swims as early in the season as possible, rather than leaving these swims to the last week available before the Championship event is to be swum.

A failure by a swimmer to swim an eligibility swim will preclude their participation in that Championship.

Committee 2020/2021

You can find our 2020/2021 Committee Members here.

We do have some Vacant Committee Member positions and we would welcome members volunteering to join the Committee and participate in the ongoing management of the club.

COVID-19 Safety Plan & Protocols

Sign-In for Spectators & Volunteers

Health guidelines play an important role in setting the protocols the club is required to comply with. The Committee has undertaken significant work to prepare for the return to club races. A COVID-19 Safety Plan for the club has been developed and it is continually updated as health guidelines change. The Committee members have also undertaken COVID-19 Infection Control training.

We ask for your assistance in complying with the protocols & plan in place. We will communicate changes as they occur and these updates can be found here.

Club Records

A total of 11 club championship records were broken last year. Congratulations to all the swimmers. How many can be broken this season???

Annual Presentation

If you missed the recent presentation, or would like to watch it again you are in luck. It can be viewed here.

Learn to Swim

The club Learn to Swim program will commence soon. Program and enrolment details will be available over the weekend, so stay tuned to the club website for these details.

Squad Enrolment

It’s time to complete your squad enrolment if you haven’t already done so. See the details here.

Relay Competition

The team relay will again be hotly contested this season. Congratulations to the Swim the Winner team who won the relay competition last season. A very close finish to the season saw Swim the Winner (Ruby Shrestha, Pare Nader, Chloe Ton, Avani Pradhan, Ren Jie Hum & Joseph Assi) overcome the “older” Merry Ladies and Grumpy Old Men teams, relegating them to the minor placings.

So it’s time to organise your team (maximum of 6 team members, with any 4 of the team swimming each week) and plan your strategies to become the champions this season.

Relay team nominations are to be submitted online each week (naming the 4 swimmers for that week).

Nominate your Swimmers

Time trials commence today and conclude on Saturday 24th October, 2020. The relay competition commences on Saturday 14th November, 2020 and is held over 10 weeks, concluding on Saturday 20th March, 2021.

2019/2020 Season Wrap-Up

We expected to be enjoying the last morning of club races for the season today and a breakfast to end what had been a very successful and rewarding season for our members.

However as we know our world has changed so much in the last month or so. The first 51 years of the club’s activities went smoothly, however the 52nd season has been the most unusual, with events such as bushfire smoke, air quality and the Coronavirus pandemic impacting upon club activities.

The support and flexibility of our club members over the season has been fantastic, as we coped with these events. Unfortunately the pandemic has not allowed us to complete the last week of the season, and our thoughts turn to those in the community and world who have been affected by the various events.

Some particular highlights we want to acknowledge during this season are:

Club Championship Records

We have seen a total of 11 records broken this season. Congratulations to:

Club Meets

This was the 2nd season we have held the Masters BPS Sprint Meet and SwimFest on the same day and we again hosted the InterClub Cup. We had a great number of club members swim in these meets and again outstanding results were achieved, with constant PB’s being achieved by our swimmers at all meets.

Thank you to our broader family members who supported us in hosting these meets, without your help we are not able to provide such successful events. We again received very positive feedback about how our club works together and provides fun well run meets.
Area Meets

We saw record numbers of swimmers represent the club at meets such as the Speedo Sprint Heats and 5 – 8 Year meets. We also had a number swimmers compete at Area Championships during the season.

The 5 – 8 Years meet was swum after the last Whales Tales was published, so we want to recognise the fantastic performances of our swimmers at this meet. We had a team of 11 swim, many in their first ever official meet and the results were outstanding. Congratulations on achieving 14 PB’s, picking up 9 medals and finalist ribbons for their great efforts.

Metropolitan & State Championships

We had a number of swimmers achieve qualifying times for Metropolitan and State Championships during the season. Unfortunately Junior State Age Championships have been cancelled for this year. The State Open Championships were held after the last Whales Tales were published and Alison Johnston competed in the Women’s 50 metre Freestyle. Alison swam 28.70 which is her fastest time since 2016, and just 0.19 outside her all time PB. Congratulations Alison.

Congratulations also to our coaches, who have worked tirelessly to prepare training programs to have swimmers peaking for all of these events. It has been a difficult season for the squad program with regular changes being forced upon training schedules.

New Technical Officials

We saw 12 of our members obtain their timekeepers accreditation this season. Welcome to the ranks of our technical officials and we hope you are keen to progress with further accreditations in the coming seasons.

Club AGM & Annual Presentation

At this time we still have the following dates booked:

  • Club AGM – Monday 25th May, 2020 commencing at 7.30pm in the Club Room
  • Annual Presentation – Saturday 30th May, 2020 commencing at 6.30pm at Club Merrylands

As such the dates for nominations for committee positions and club awards are:

  • Service Excellence Award – closes 31st March, 2020
  • Life Member nomination – 60 days before the AGM (Thursday 26th March, 2020)
  • Committee nomination – 30 days before the AGM (Saturday 25th April, 2020)

However we will continue to review the dates for these events, depending on circumstances over the coming month or so. It is possible that these dates may be altered and pushed back to later in the year. Updates to these events will be provided on the club website and Facebook page.

Swimming NSW Junior Metropolitan Championships

Summer Shrestha (3 events) and Matthew Vicic (4 events) competed at the Junior Metropolitan Championships at SOPAC last weekend. Summer achieved 3 PB’s & 3 State qualifying times, whilst Matthew achieved 2 PB’s & 1 State qualifying time. MSW 5-8 Years Meet - today

This afternoon we have a team of 11 swimmers competing at the MSW 5-8 Years meet. This is the largest number of swimmers we have had at this meet in over 25 years. A number of our members are competing at a swim meet for the first time and we are as excited as they are. May the whale be with:

Aisha Abdelraheem, Daniel Kalouche, Ethan Ton, Jay Shrestha, Julian Kalouche, Lindsey Matthew, Lucas Alverez, Mason Nader, Pare Nader, Ruby Shrestha, William Johnston

Swimming NSW State Open Championships – this weekend

Alison Sakurovs is representing our club at the NSW State Open Championships, competing in the Womens 50 metre Freestyle at approx. 12.15pm today. This meet is also being used by a number of swimmers as a warm-up event for their Olympic preparations, so Alison is again competing against swimmers such as Cate & Bronte Campbell and Madison Wilson. May the whale be with you too.

Club Races – Saturday 21st March, 2020 – commences at 6.30am

Next Saturday morning we are holding the 1500 metre Championships as well as our regular club races. To fit the program into the morning we need to start club races at 6.30am. We are expecting two full heats of the 1500 metre Championships so we will need timekeepers covering all 8 lanes from 6.30am. We ask that you arrive ready for races to commence at 6.30am and we appreciate your help in providing the number of technical officials required for this to occur.

Club Championship Records

This season we have seen an unprecedented achievement with many championship records being broken (some dating back over 30 years). Congratulations to all of our swimmers who have broken records this season, some have individually broken a number of records and this is positive reinforcement of the very hard work our swimmers and coaches undertake weekly. With two more championships left in the season, can we see more broken?. For the full list of club championship records visit the Championship Records page.

Merrylands SwimFest & Masters BPS Meets

What a great day last Saturday. Our 2nd time running both meets on the same day was a great success again. Thank you to everyone who organised the meets, worked on the day setting up, roles during the meets and packing up. We received a lot of positive feedback about the meets and especially how our club was able to provide people for almost all of the roles to run the day. Congratulations to everyone on a job very well done. As Young Mr Grace would say “you’ve all done very well”!

Also a big thank you to our club sponsors, Club Merrylands, Starr Partners & Merrylands Swimming Squad. We appreciate the kind support provided by these organisations in sponsorship of the meets and during the season. Thank you also to Engine & Fashion Fish Design who kindly donated fantastic prizes for the raffle held on the day.

The overall club point scores for the meets were:
