Easter Raffle – Saturday 24th March, 2018

To celebrate the end of the season we are holding an Easter Raffle with the winner drawn next Saturday (24th March, 2018). To provide prizes for the raffle we are seeking donations of Easter eggs so that we can have a number of hamper prizes. Donations for the hamper prizes can still be made next Saturday morning. We will also be holding a club bbq on the morning to celebrate the end of the season.

Merrylands Amateur Swimming Club – 50th Anniversary

Don’t forget to have your guess in the Lolly Guessing competition. See Margaret to have your guess. The winner will be announced next Saturday.

Swim Meets

We have a lot of our members swimming at swim meets this weekend. 12 at the Masters NSW State Championships at SOPAC and 25 at the MSW Sprint Meet at Blacktown. Good luck to all of our swimmers and may the Whale be with you.

Senior Handicap

With the Masters State Championships today there is no Senior Handicap this morning. This heat has been postponed by the Committee and it will be held next Saturday morning.

Squad Training

Training moves to Granville Pool on Tuesday 3rd April, 2018. At this stage there are no changes planned to the current schedule and due to limited lane space there are no training sessions planned for Saturday mornings.

All swimmers who intend on continuing to train in April must complete the Training Enrolment Form by Friday, 30th March so that the coach can determine what time sessions will be held. Squads will also have a training break over the coming months. To complete the online Training Enrolment Form and to find out about the training breaks for your squad visit the club website.

Annual Presentation & AGM

Our Annual Presentation will be held on Saturday 2nd June, 2018 at Club Merrylands (Newman Room). Arrive at 6.00pm for presentation of trophies to commence at 6.30pm. You may wish to arrive at the club earlier to have dinner before presentation starts, or you may want to have dinner after the presentation of trophies has concluded. It is a great opportunity for us to support one of our club sponsors.

The date for the Club’s AGM is yet to be set, but it is generally the Monday night following the Annual Presentation (we will communicate this as soon as the Committee sets the date). The dates for nominations for committee positions and awards are:

• Service Excellence Award – closes 31st March, 2018
• Life Member nomination – 60 days before the AGM
• Committee nomination – 30 days before the AGM

Winter Swimming

So what do you do with swimmer’s over the winter months? McCredie Park Aquatics Swimming Club run club races on a Friday night at Guildford Pool (races start at 6.30pm). Their winter season commences in April and concludes in September. There are breaks over the school holiday periods in April & July. See Graham for more information.

MSW 5 – 8 Years Development Meet

Congratulations to Joseph Assi, Abraham El-Chami, Pare Nader, Lisa Shrestha, Unish Shrestha & Daniel Vicic who all competed in the MSW 5 – 8 Years Development Meet last Saturday. They swam 17 PB’s out of 18 swims, what a wonderful effort by you all. Thank you to Margaret Edwards, Kylee Murray, Leanne & Emily Tovkach who volunteered and undertook our hosting duties at the meet.

Learn To Swim

The current 6 week LTS program finishes today. We hope all of our participants have enjoyed the lessons and learnt some valuable water skills. Thank you to our Instructors and Helpers who have volunteered their time to provide these lessons.

Upcoming Events

What a February!

Well now February is over we can catch our breath as we enter the last 4 weeks of the season. What a month February was with two major swim meets being held at Merrylands.

The Merrylands SwimFest was an outstanding success, with our club’s 30 swimmers achieving 63 PB’s and winning 3 gold, 7 silver and 2 bronze medals. A fantastic result, so congratulations to each one of you and to your coaches.

Out of the pool we again saw the family culture of getting in and doing any job required our club is renowned for. A great big thank you to everyone who helped organise the meet and on the day setting up, jobs during the meet and packing up. The weather held off and we finished earlier than the timeline, so a great effort in ensuring the flow of the meet throughout the afternoon. The Merrylands swimming family is a great example of community spirit and we have received some great feedback from other clubs about this.

I would also like to extend a big thank you to our sponsors for the meet, Club Merrylands, Accucom Systems Integration, Nikkis Pizza and Merrylands Swimming Squad.

MSW Qualifying Meet

Congratulations to Michael Evans, Reece Tomkinson & Alison Sakurovs who all swam at the MSW qualifying meet last Sunday. PB’s galore were swum, so a fantastic effort by the swimmers and coach.

Merrylands SwimFest Meet – Today

Today we are hosting the Merrylands SwimFest with 236 swimmers representing 34 clubs, with 30 swimmers from our club participating. We will be setting up after club races and squad training today, so if you can stay and help that would be greatly appreciated. Final set up will commence from 12.30pm, with warm-up for swimmers at 1.30pm (all of our swimmers should be stretching and in swimming costumes prior to warm-up commencing) and races commencing at 2.30pm.

If you haven’t yet confirmed you are able to assist during the meet please see Graham or Margaret this morning. Good luck to all of our swimmers and thank you to everyone who is helping out on the day.

Masters BPS Meet

Last Saturday saw our club host our 2nd Masters Meet. It was a great success again, with feedback from visiting officials very complimentary about how smoothly the meet ran and the family culture of our club.

Thank you to everyone who helped out, be they our junior swimmers, masters swimmers, parents and officials. Behind the scenes Alison spent weeks preparing the meet, so an extra big thank you to you Alison.

For the record Ryde won the point score, with Merrylands 2nd and Warringah 3rd.

Speedo Sprint Heats

Congratulations to the 10 swimmers who represented our club last Sunday. Great results with a lot of PB’s achieved across all strokes. Well done to all of our swimmers and coaches.

Merrylands Amateur Swimming Club – 50th Anniversary

Masters BPS Meet - Today

Today we are hosting our annual Masters BPS meet. This event has attracted a total of 75 Masters swimmers from across various clubs in NSW/ACT, as well as 11 visiting technical officials.

The meet commences with warm-up at 11.00am and races starting at 11.30am. We expect the races to conclude by 1.00pm. We will be staying after club races & squad training to set up for the meet and I would like to thank our members (young and old) and parents who are helping with the meet today.

Merrylands SwimFest Meet – Saturday 24th February, 2018

This meet is one where every junior club member should be entering events as it is our major swim meet for the season. Entries close online at 5.00pm TODAY.

Reece Tomkinson is a member of the Youth Advisory Panel and he has been active in the work to plan this event. The Twilight Race Party will be held on Saturday 17th February, 2018 from 4pm to 8pm at the Angelo Anestis Aquatic Centre, Bexley.

Recently Swimming NSW sought nominations for new members to join the Youth Advisory Panel for the coming season. It gives me great pleasure to advise you that Sophia Vicic is one of 7 new appointments selected from a large group of applicants. Sophia will join Reece Tomkinson on the panel, giving our club two representatives on this important panel.

Metro South West Area program changes 2018/2019

Metro South West Area programs will be changing during the 2018/2019 and this will include date and championship meet format changes. These changes operate in conjunction with Swimming NSW & Swimming Australia program changes and one of the major changes will be to Area & State Championship age group qualification, number of days/sessions of meets and events offered.

As we receive final confirmation of new dates and program changes we will communicate these to you. However our coaches are aware of the proposed changes and their training programs will reflect the changes to ensure our swimmers are suitably prepared for these meets.

Race Starting Time and Entries

Remember to enter races the Saturday prior to or during the week before the cut-off times (manual card entries at 6pm Wednesday & online entries at 8pm Thursday). There is a limit of 2 swims in addition to a championship swim (when there is a championship event for your age group).

As we enter the last 8 weeks of our season we have championships every Saturday morning. A couple of reminders to help these mornings run smoothly:

• A limit of 2 swims in addition to a championship swim (when there is a championship for your age group)
• Manual card entries close at 6pm on Wednesday
• Online entries close at 8pm Thursday
• No late entries or changes to swims are accepted

An invitation is extended to all Coaches, Club Members and Parents to attend an information evening where the proposed new competition structure will be presented by MSW.

This meeting is being held on Tuesday 6th February, 2018 at Guildford Pool at 7.30pm.

Youth Advisory Panel’s Twilight Race Party

Swimming NSW’s Youth Advisory Panel has been busy organising an event designed specifically by teenagers for teenagers. Learn to Swim

Our Learn to Swim program commences this morning and runs for 6 weeks. Welcome to our returning and new learn to swim participants and thank you to all of our instructors and helpers for volunteering for this program.

Active Kids Program

As previously advised this NSW Government initiative commenced on 31st January, 2018. It is a program open to all NSW school enrolled children and provides each child with a voucher for $100 to use towards an eligible sport activity every calendar year.

Registration to obtain a voucher is available and the voucher is valid for use until 31st December, 2018. You can retain the voucher to use when swimming registrations for the 2018/2019 season occur in October 2018.

Merrylands Amateur Swimming Club – 50th Anniversary

As we have mentioned earlier in the season 2018 will see our club celebrate our 50th anniversary. As the swimming centre officially opened in November 1968 we will have a range of celebrations over the 2018/2019 season. We have a sub-committee (Ian Wilson, Trish Johnston & Margaret Edwards) working on ideas for these celebrations. If you have any ideas or would like to assist please see one of these people.

Ready.Set.Race - Today

Today we are hosting a Ready.Set.Race event as part of the Australia Swims celebrations. We extend a welcome to our visitors this morning and hope you enjoy this event.

NSW State Open Championships

Reece Tomkinson & Alison Sakurovs both represented our club at the NSW State Open Championships last weekend. Congratulations on your achievements including two PB’s to Reece and a season best time for Alison. Enjoy the well earned rest (even though it may be short lived!).

Next Friday Night - 2nd February, 2018

Don’t forget next Friday night we are holding our 1500 metre Freestyle Open Championships together with Junior Handicap & Mystery Medley events. Entries close Wednesday (manual card entries) & Thursday (online entries). Warm-up & marshalling is at 6.45pm.

Speedo Sprint Heats

The Speedo Sprint Series caters for girls and boys aged between 8-13 years in 50m Freestyle, 50m Breaststroke, 50m Backstroke and 50m Butterfly events and is a great way to have fun and learn new skills in a friendly environment.

Due to its timing, the meet, along with the Merrylands SwimFest, also provides good practice for School Swimming Carnivals. All club members aged from 8 to 13 are encouraged to enter.

This year's meet will be held on Sunday, 11th February, 2018 at Blacktown Aquatic Centre (races start at 1.00pm). Online entries close on Tuesday 30th January, 2018.

Hosting Duties

We have been rostered to provide hosting duties at the Metro South West 5 – 8 Years meet on Saturday 3rd March, 2018. This is an afternoon meet held locally at Guildford Pool. Our duties include helping with gate entry, result posting, presentation of medals & ribbons etc. We need about 4 or 5 helpers on the day, so if you can help please let Graham know.

Learn to Swim

Next Saturday (2nd February, 2018) sees the start of another Learn to Swim program. This program will run for 6 weeks. Thank you to all of our instructors and helpers for volunteering for this program.

Active Kids Program

As previously advised this NSW Government initiative commences on 31st January, 2018. It is a program open to all NSW school enrolled children and provides each child with a voucher for $100 to use towards an eligible sport activity every calendar year.

Registration to obtain a voucher will be available from 31st January, 2018 and the voucher is valid for use until 31st December, 2018. You can retain the voucher to use when swimming registrations for the 2018/2019 season occur in October 2018.

Ready.Set.Race

Next Saturday (27th January, 2018) we will be hosting a Ready.Set.Race event as part of the Australia Swims celebrations. This is a great morning for kids looking to have fun and get some racing practice for their school swimming carnival.

Do you know someone who has children aged 7 to 12 years who are not already a swimming club member and would enjoy some races and a skills coaching session? A great way to prepare for school carnivals. They must be able to swim 25 metres Freestyle and 25 metres Backstroke and/or 25m Breaststroke.

NSW State Open Championships

Reece Tomkinson & Alison Sakurovs are both representing our club at the NSW State Open Championships this weekend. Congratulations on qualifying and may the Whale be with you both for your swims.

Speedo Sprint Heats

The Speedo Sprint Series caters for girls and boys aged between 8-13 years in 50m Freestyle, 50m Breaststroke, 50m Backstroke and 50m Butterfly events and is a great way to have fun and learn new skills in a friendly environment.

Due to its timing, the meet, along with the Merrylands SwimFest, also provides good practice for School Swimming Carnivals. All club members aged from 8 to 13 are encouraged to enter.

This year's meet will be held on Sunday, 11th February, 2018 at Blacktown Aquatic Centre (races start at 1.00pm). Online entries close on Tuesday 30th January, 2018.
