Cumberland Short Course Results

Merrylands had 6 Medallists and 19 Finalists at the inaugural Cumberland Short Course Championships last weekend.

Troy Tomkinson finished in the top 10 in all 7 of his events and won 3 medals. He won the silver medal in the 100m Butterfly and the bronze in the 50m and 100m Freestyle.

Etiuate Veamatahau and Amber Johnson also placed in the top 10 in all of their events. ET won the bronze medal in the 50m Freestyle while Amber Johnson became the first female Merrylands swimmer to qualify for State in over 10 years in the 50m Freestyle.

Mitchell Emery and Robert Griffey each took home a bronze medal. Mitchell placed third in the 100m Breaststroke and Robert placed third in the 100m Freestyle.

    At last weekend’s NSW Metropolitan Short Course Championships, Merrylands swimmers broke 13 PBs and were finalists in 3 events.

    It was an especially good meet for Todd Jenkin and Etiuate Veamatahau, representing the club for the first time at the Metropolitan Championships. Both Todd and ET broke their PBs in all their events. Todd also placed 7th in the 12-13yrs 50m Breaststroke.

    Troy Tomkinson broke his PB in the 14-15yrs 100m Butterfly to place 10th and Mitchell Emery placed 6th in the 11yrs & Under 100m Breaststroke.

  • Telstra Swimming Grand Prix Series

    The Telstra Swimming Grand Prix Series comes to the Sydney Aquatic Centre on July 18th-19th, 2002.

    The second leg of the series will feature the entire Australian Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championship Swimming Teams in their final hit out before flying to Manchester for the Commonwealth Games.

    Australian Swimming is giving club members the opportunity to see the teams in action for just $2.00 per session. To take advantage of this great offer, simply be at the Sydney Aquatic Centre during the times listed below.

    Session 1: Thursday, 18th July, 2002
    10:00am to 12:00pm (Doors open at 8:30am)
     
    Session 2: Thursday, 18th July, 2002
    6:00pm to 8:00pm (Doors open at 4:30pm)
     
    Session 3: Friday, 19th July, 2002
    9:00am to 11:00am (Doors open at 7:30am)

    So if you’re looking for some great value school holiday entertainment, get down to the Sydney Aquatic Centre to cheer on the Aussies.

  • Cumberland Short Course Championships

    Cumberland has decided to hold District Short Course Championships for the first time this year.

    The championships will replace the District Winter Meets held in previous years and will follow a similar format to the Metropolitan and State Championships. The meet consists of 4 sessions held over 2 days on August 3rd & 4th, 2002 at the Sydney Aquatic Centre.

    Entries for the championships close on Monday, 15th July, 2002. The entries are to be on Multi-Entry Cards, which will be available at training from Tuesday, 8th July, 2002.

    To compete at these championships you must have achieved the qualifying time at a “District Approved Meet”. The Multi-Entry cards must be completely filled out including date and place that times were achieved. Entries must also include your registration number.

    Merrylands will be hosting Session 3 of the championships (Sunday morning) and we will require helpers on the day. Please see Russel Burden to let him know what you can help with.

    Merrylands will be sending it’s biggest team in over 10 years to this weekend’s NSW Metropolitan Short Course Championships. The team of 8 swimmers, an increase of 3 from last year, will contest a total of 18 events.

  • Cumberland Development Squads Announced

    The Cumberland Development Squads have been announced with the following 6 swimmers from our club being selected:

    Novice Squad

    Challenge Squad
    Troy Tomkinson

    The Novice Squad will attend the Sydney Aquatic Centre for a 1½ hr pool session and then a guided tour of the Centre on 17 August 2002.

    The Achiever Squad will attend the Life Adventure Site Camp for Team building exercises. 40 of the squad will then attend the NSW Development Meet with the remaining members attending a selected swim meet. The selected swim meet will be one of the NSW Country Regional Meets or another meet in the Metropolitan area.
    The “Life” camp will take place from Friday evening 6 September 2002 until midday Sunday 8 September 2002 with Cumberland subsidising the cost of accommodation and main meals.
    The NSW Development Meet will take place on 29 September 2002 at Sydney Aquatic Centre. The selectors will select those that are to swim at this event.
    Those that do not swim at the Development Meet and who attend the camp will be invited to attend the other selected meet later in the year.

    The Target Squad will attend a camp at Narrabeen Fitness Camp on either 11/12/13 or 18/19/20 October 2002 depending on availability. The program will consist of training sessions and land based activities.
    Cumberland will subsidise the cost of accommodation and main meals.
    Congratulations to the 6 swimmers selected. Swimmers in the squads will be receiving letters over the next couple of weeks.

  • QANTAS Skins Tickets

    The tickets for the 2002 QANTAS Skins have arrived.

    If you have purchased tickets through the club you will be contacted over the next week and told how you can collect your tickets.

    The QANTAS Skins will be held at the Sydney Aquatic Centre on Friday, 21st June, 2002. The competition will commence at 7:30pm with doors opening at 6:00pm and will feature all of the 2002 Australian Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championship team members.

    Entries for the 2002 NSW Metropolitan Short Course Championships close on Monday, 17th June, 2002. The entries are to be on Multi-Entry Cards, which will be available at training from Tuesday 11th June, 2002.

    To compete at these championships you must have achieved the qualifying time at a “District Approved Meet”.

    Meets that are not District Approved include:
  • School Swimming Carnivals (School, District/Zone, and some Regional/Area)

  • RSL Meets

  • RSL Club nights


  • You can not use times achieved at these meets and entries will not be accepted if these times are used.
