State Open Entries

Entries for the 2010 NSW State Open Short Course Championships start to close from Monday, 31st May, 2010.

To compete at these championships you must have achieved the required qualifying time at an approved meet as detailed on the Qualifying Time Information page.

All entrants from our club will be required to use the Online Entries system. Online Entries will close at 3pm SHARP on Wednesday 9th June, 2010. Manual entries will only be accepted if you cannot enter online, but close with the club on Monday, 31st May, 2010. All entries after this date must be completed online. Instructions on how to enter online are here.

The Entry List for the meet will be placed on the homepage of the Swimming NSW website (www.nswswimming.com.au) which will be available for download from approximately 5pm Wednesday 9th June, 2010. All entrants are encouraged to download this document and check the events they have entered and their qualifying times. If any of these are incorrect you will have until 5pm Thursday 10th June, 2010 to send an email to correct any mistakes to meet.entries@nsw.swimming.org.au.
Changes can only be made by sending an email.

All competitors should attempt to enter the championships using the online system as soon as possible. The online system uses your best time as at the closing date for your entry time. So you can enter early, knowing that if you swim a new PB before the closing date, that new time will still be used as your entry time. If you have any questions or problems please contact a member of the club’s Competition Committee (Tricia Johnston, Teresa Johnson or Peter Johnston) before the Manual Entry closing date so that you don't miss out on entering.

For more information on NSW meets read the Championship Procedures information in the Swim Meets Section.

Instructions on how to enter online can be found here and on the Meet Entry Procedures page.

No late entries will be accepted.

Hayley Baker and Lachlan Stewart were both presented with the Graded Pointscore Trophies at the club's Annual Presentation Evening tonight.

This year was the second in a row that Lachlan has taken home the award, while Hayley won the competition for the first time.

In a close finish, Steven Nguyen won the Senior Handicap for the second year in a row, just ahead of Ian Wilson and Peter Johnston.

Brittany Johnson was presented with the Champion of Champions Award for a record breaking 6th time. Brittany won the Senior and Open Womens Championships, breaking 16 club championship records along the way and also represented the club at the Area, Metropolitan and State Open Championships. This was the first year that Brittany had qualified for the State Open Championships.
Brittany was also the first recipient of the Masters Aerobic Trophy.

Carl Sorensen was presented with The Jack Smart Encouragement Award after steadily improving over the season. In another first, the Relay Competition title was won by a new team, "Joint Venture" (Mitchell Burt, Anthony Ventra, Amber Johnson, Steven Nguyen, Brittany Johnson, Peter Johnston) at their first attempt. The team was a merger of "The Swimmers" and "To Be Advised" from last year's competition and the combination proved hard to beat. Ian Wilson was presented with the Lions Club Award for his volunteer work throughout the season while Dylan Baker was presented with the Learn to Swim Volunteer of the Year Award for his contribution to the Learn to Swim Program.

In our Winter Season Philo Farid and Hayley Baker won the Graded Pointscore competitions for the first time.

Five awards were presented to members of Merrylands Swimming Squad for their efforts at Swimming Training throughout the season. All swimmers were deserved recipients of the Coach's Awards with Wesley Latukefu, Hayley Baker, Jacob Killick, Brittany Johnson and Ian Wilson all taking home a club beanie.

The night was very enjoyable and those people that stayed after the presentation had a good time.

Thank you to all the people who helped organise the presentation and who helped throughout the season. Thank you also to the club's first President, Jim Earl, and his son Tony, who were special guests.

You can find the season results in the Club Races section and the full list of other awards presented on the night in the Presentation section.

  • Swim Centres Review

This will be the last winter that you can swim at either Merrylands or Wentworthville Swimming Centres.

Holroyd Council has decided that it can save $221,000 by not opening the two centres during the winter season. The decision was announced to the user groups at the Annual Swim Centres Committee Meeting on May 5th. Merrylands has already closed its doors for the winter, with Wentworthville to follow on the 30th June. Neither centre will re-open until early October 2010 with both centres closing again at the end of March, 2011.

The closure of the pools coincides with the Swim Centres Review that Council is currently conducting. Consultants have been hired to assess the feasibility of closing the three existing centres and building a single new Aquatic/Leisure Centre, at a location to be determined.

As part of the consultation process, Council has produced a questionnaire to determine the needs to be catered for by any future centre. All club members, regardless of age, are encouraged to complete the questionnaire which can be completed online and is accessible below.

Council's decision to close both Merrylands and Wentworthville from April to October will greatly affect the club's activities. The decision has effectively signalled the end of the club's Winter Competition and Pre-Season time trials and it will also heavily impact on the training of the club's swimming squads during the winter months.

Furthermore, the Swim Centres Review and its outcomes have the potential to have an even larger impact on the activities of the club. The future of the club’s Learn to Swim Program and Swimming Squad Program will be in doubt as will the very existence of the club itself.

Members are urged to complete the questionnaire here before Wednesday, June 2nd.

    Dive Into the Winter Season

The 2010 Winter Season hits the water on Saturday, 10th April, 2010. This year our winter competition will again feature events such as the 3x50m Knockout Freestyle Skins, 2x50m Handicap Relay and 2x50m Random Relay that have proved so popular the last two seasons.

The 25m Sprint Challenge is also back, as is the 50m Individual Medley and a new 100m Individual Medley.

The 50m and 100m Individual Medley are for swimmers who don't swim 50m in one or more strokes. In the IM they only have to do 12.5m (or 25m in the 100m IM) of each stroke.

In the Knockout Skins, 4 swimmers go head to head over three 50m sprints with only a 2 minute gap between each one. The catch is the last swimmer to touch the wall in each 50m is knocked out until it is just one-on-one in the final heat.

The Handicap Relay consists of teams of 2 swimmers who are given a time handicap to give all teams a chance of winning the race, while the Random Relay also consists of teams of two swimmers picked by the race committee to create teams of similar speed to also give all teams a chance of winning the race.

For Masters Swimmers, a Timed Swim has also been added to the program as part of the Aerobic Trophy. Masters Swimmers can elect to do a timed swim of ½ hour, ¾ hour or 1 hour in either Freestyle, Backstroke or Breaststroke, for points towards the Aerobic Trophy.

If you do another sport during winter, don't worry, most weeks we are finished by 8am so you will have plenty of time to have a swim, so come and join us.

The season will run for 5 weeks until the pool closes on May 9th.

The Winter Season Program is available for download from the Club Races page and the Winter Race By-Laws are available on the Governing Documents page.
